BVA capitalises on HD World Cup fever with UK Blu-ray bundle

The British Video Association (BVA) has announced a partnership between Universal Pictures, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, Warner Home Video and Samsung that will see a promotional Blu-ray bundle hit UK stores ahead of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

With this year’s tournament the first to be televised in high definition, retailers are expecting a boost in demand for new HDTVs. The new bundle includes six blockbuster movies for all the family on Blu-ray Disc and a Blu-ray player, allowing consumers to kick start their collection at a fraction of the normal cost.

Blu-ray titles included in the bundle are Mamma Mia! and Bruno from Universal Pictures, Up and Toy Story from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment UK, and Sweeny Todd and 300 from Warner Home Video. The bundle is available with three Samsung BD players: the BD-C5300, BD-C8200 and BD-C8500. The latter two both include Hard Disk Drives and free-to-air HD TV compatible digital tuners.

UK Blu-ray Disc sales rise again

New figures released by the British Video Association have shown strong year-on-year growth for Blu-ray Discs based on data for the first quarter of 2010.

The figures demonstrate the increasingly popularity of the BD format, which is currently driving growth across the home entertainment market. Sales of Blu-ray Discs are up 69.5% (up 50% in value) on the same period in 2009, reaching 2.7m units in the first three months of the year, taking the total number of Blu-ray Discs sold to 15.6m units since launch.

Hannah Conduct, Marketing Manager at the British Video Association, said:

“While it is extremely encouraging to see such strong growth in market volumes in the run up to Easter, the performance of Blu-ray is especially impressive. Growing sales show that the benefits of the format – higher picture quality, superior sound, and an ever-expanding range of titles – are better understood than ever before. The strong sales reflect consumer confidence in Blu-ray.”

The top three best selling Blu-ray titles of the quarter saw their Blu-ray performance average at 20% of the total disc sales with The Hurtlocker at 24% (Elevation Sales), Up at 17% (Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment) and 2012 at 20% (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment).

The best selling Blu-ray Disc titles for Q1 2010 were as follows:

1. The Hurt Locker
2. Up
3. 2012
4. The Twilight Saga – New Moon
5. District 9
6. This Is It
7. Toy Story
8. The Taking Of Pelham 123
9. Inglourious Basterds
10. Toy Story 2

The highly-anticipated Oscar nominations for 2010 have finally been announced. Four of the ten nominations for Best Picture are already (or imminently) available to watch on Blu-ray, equipped with plenty of special features for delving into the reasons these films have received critical acclaim.

Both The Hurt Locker and Up (released in Europe this month) have special behind the scenes footage presented in high definition. In Up for example, one of the many short documentaries shows how the Pixar team developed their 78-year old action hero and the efforts they went through to accurately convey his moves. It also contains BD-live feature The Global Guardian Badge Game, which gives kids and families a chance to brush up on their geography skills.

On the Inglourious Basterds Blu-ray, a roundtable discussion with director Quentin Tarantino, Brad Pitt, and film critic Elvis Mitchell is worth a watch, for additional understanding of the films’ premise.  Finally, the District 9 Blu-ray provides the option to watch the film with BD-Live features MovieIQ and Cinechat, as well as including several behind the scenes documentaries (all in HD).

All in all, the special features on these Oscar nominated Blu-ray Discs will ensure you are fully equipped with all the information to choose which you think is most deserving of the top prize. The question is, will your favourite win?

New demo disc shows full potential of Blu-ray Disc

A new demo disc showcasing all aspects of Blu-ray Disc has made its way across Europe. The disc consists of a five-minute promotional trailer extolling all the virtues of BD, including comparisons of the video and audio quality with DVD, examples of interactive BD-Live content and information on how Blu-ray technology works.

The video is illustrated with scenes from some of this year’s most anticipated BD releases, including Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Star Trek, Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince, Fast & Furious, Public Enemies, The Hangover and Up. The message is clear: without Blu-ray Disc, your HDTV is just a TV.

The video, available to view below (make sure you click HD!), is an important promotional asset that is available to retailers and all BDA member and contributor companies to host on their websites and for use in store.
