Pitted against ‘The Kings Speech’ and ‘The Black Swan’ to take Best Movie at this year’s Oscars, we thought we’d start the week by giving away a copy of David Fincher’s, ‘The Social Network’.
In 2003 Harvard undergrad and computer programmer Mark Zuckerberg (Jessie Eisenberg) begins work on a new networking idea called Facebook. What begins as an experiment with friend Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield) quickly snowballs into a modern revolution in communication, catapulting Zuckerberg into the limelight and making him the youngest billionaire in history.

@altaranga My favourite film based on a true story would have to be Fargo. Written, directed and produced by the Coen brothers it opens with the text “THIS IS A TRUE STORY”, even though it is actually a work of fiction. Genius!!

Heard great things about this movie. I haven’t seen it yet but saw the reviews and have heard what people said. Got those awards too. I love true based stories. I am always watching Dateline or those true detective shows. I really enjoyed The blind side.

I would have to say Pursuit of Happiness. It was a great story about a man who did everything imaginable to provide a better life for himself and his son. Truly inspiring.
Milk was the first movie in a LONG time that captured my interest so intently that I couldn’t believe how fast the time flew by. I find myself picking up my phone to read tweets during some movies because they have slow points that bore me. Not the story of Harvey Milk! Fast-paced, well-written, and so touching! Tragic and beautiful at the same time. Thank you.
I would have to go with Titanic I know the love story bit didnt happen..altho haven’t said that who’s to say it never! But actually seeing how we believe now how the events unfolded of that darkened day/night was interesting. Brilliantly written, brilliantly acted!
Alternatively I’m sure my life would make for some good viewing..haha!

My favorite movie based on a true story is Enemy at the Gates starring Jude Law. The movie from beginning to end captures the audience with it’s gritty portrayal of WWII Russia. I loved the concept of the story of how the whole country is depending on 1 sniper’s success in the war, especially since he’s needed to boost morale for the already downtrodden Russian soldiers. It’s a story of survival and hope, and what it takes to be a hero. To this day it’s one of my favorite movies, and if you haven’t seen it you should watch it because there aren’t many WWII era based films on Russia’s perspective.

Catch Me If You Can was amazing! I can’t believe how clever Frank Abagnale was to fool all those people and it was such an entertaining film.
Wolf Creek was supposedly based on true events, and if so then it’s the only horror to actually scare me!
Oh and I just saw The Wrestler, Mickey Rourke definitely deserved that award for portraying Randy “The Ram”.

Eight Below – it’s a 2006 Disney movie not that known that I simply love. It’s a wonderful, heartwarming film about a dog sled team abandoned in Antarctica. The 8 canine actors steal your heart with their performance and the whole story about them. The movie is an amazing story about friendship and survival and it manages to bring you to tears.

I thought A Beautiful Mind was fabulous – probably the best true-life film I’ve ever seen.
As for one that I’d like to see made, the miracle of the Chilean Miners is something I’m looking forward to.
I’m going back a bit, but the film with Robin Williams, based on Awakenings by Oliver Sacks, had a tremendous impact on me. I can’t imagine what it would be like to wake from a coma after so many years.

My favourite true story film is Rescue Dawn, which was directed by Werner Herzog and starred Christian Bale. We know that Christian has undergone a physical transformation on a number of films, but here it accompanies a tale of hunger, desperation and redemption that really captures the human spirit.

Hard decision. I’d have to say my top 2 favorites would have to be black hawk down and zodiac. Black hawk down is probably the tip top though. The movie was just absolutely fantastic. While I know that not everything was 100% accurate it still told the story very well of what really did go on. Fantastic director mixed with fantastic actors made for a powerful film.

The film: Disney’s Remember The Titans. The tale: Despite being centered around a high school team trying to make their as a rags-to-riches American football team, a sport I detest, it’s the story about rising above adversity and putting aside racial prejudices which really brings the spark out in this film. Just love it!!

I have just recently watched the Richard Gere movie ‘Hachi: A Dog’s Tale’ and i blubbed through the whole film. It is a true story from Japan but given the Hollywood treatment. An adopted puppy is raised by Richard Gere’s character and they develop an amazing bond of trust and love.
Every day the Akita ‘Hachi’ follows his master to the station and then goes back every night to meet him off the train. The master dies and for 10 long years the dog goes to the station and waits for his return. It is a beautiful story of the spirit of the dog and as a huge dog lover i cried buckets! There is a bronze statue of the dog at the Tokyo station where it happened for real. Just a lovely film.
I think Walk The Line was fabulous. Joaquin Phoenix did a fantastic portrayal of Johnny Cash and it was nice to get an even better idea of the man behind the music. @alien_83 on Twitter.
For me it’s the story of Karen Silkwood. The cast were all at the top of their game and the story is simply outstanding. If you’ve not seen Streep, Russell and Cher in Silkwood you should go and watch it now.

Mine is the latest and most brillaint film The King’s Speech! I cannot understand why this story was not told sooner, unless it had to be kept hidden. I love stories about our history, but especially when they revolve around people that you assume have grand live and no trials and tribulations. You would never have known that The King was actually subjected to child abuse! Incredible and amazing. Sensitively mastered. A true gem.
I am really looking forward to seeing this movie. We always wait for them to come out on Bluray now instead of going to see them at the theater. I like the made from true stories most of all..it’s hard to choose a favorite. I’ll go with Erin Brokovich.

favorite film based on a true story? I’d have to go with “Erin brockovich” because she helped a lot of people get money from a company that was putting toxic chemicals in the water supply and making their children sick. Great story!

It may not be my favorite movie based on a true story ever but because I’ve seen it recently it’s the first one which comes in my mind right now: Unstoppable. It’s such a great action movie, so beautifuly shot and it features the awesome Denzel Washington. I guess that movies based on narrowly avoided disasters or with a happy end are one of my guilty pleasures 😀

The Departed is my favorite film based on a true story. Fascinating plot, and brilliantly acted by DeCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Wahlberg, Baldwin, etc. Not to mention the amazing direction of Scorcese and the music of the Dropkick Murphys. It all flows together brilliantly and an interesting tale.

Not to be a copycat, but I love Apollo 13 as well. I feel it was an accurate movie detailing events as they happened, without some exaggeration that some films tend to include. I also feel that it was one of Ron Howard’s finest moments in directing, and I wish he received more acknowledgment for this film.l

For me I have to admit the film Moon changed my life, literally. You’ll know me as Sam no.01 from the film, little did I know I was Sam no.01138 I now have a new identity @Gordon_Russell and i live my life from day to day trying to fit in, I’m currently in training at the European Space Program and will hopefully make it back to Sam no.02 before his 3 years are up.
I admit I was in a bad shape when I made it back to earth, but a girl at the local gym saw me on the treadmill and said I really should eat my 5 fruit and veg a day, and what do you know, now I’m looking better than ever.
I play table-tennis with the girl every second Friday… I gave her the nickname GERTY : )

Australia is suffering from a series of disasters from floods and cyclones to forest fires. A film could be made perhaps around this perhaps based on the experiences of one family or community and showing peoples willingness to help each other and focus on the young boy who lost his life in the flood after putting his younger brother first.
Black Hawk Down: ignoring the bias of the film it is actually a well orchestrated sequence of events that is well portrayed through a good script and good actors. The action is continuous throughout delivering the hard reality of war. There are moments that impact you directly as suffering and loss are occasionally explored but often quickly diverted by extreme events happening elsewhere. I would have liked to have seen a more balanced representation of events from both perspectives and not primarily the one. Perhaps the potential for another film to explain what had gone so badly wrong in Somalia that lead to the crisis we still see today.
The Blind Side! That was such a great movie, very inspiring. I know there was a lot of things added to the movie, but the outcome was true! Sandra Bullock was so good in it too! There are so many movies based on true stories that I love, going all the was back to Brian’s song and Mommy Dearest! True stories make the best movies because a lot of time truth is crazier then fiction!!
I think schindlers list is up there in my favorite true stories. Because of one man many people were able to survive. The ending was very touching, to see the survivors and the generations of people that were created because of his heroism is beyond amazing.

My favourite film based on a true story is Mask starring Cher & Eric Stoltz. The storyline is dramatic yet touching and it makes you think about the shortcomings within todays society. Brilliantly acted & a truly remarkable true story.
I loved “Lord of War.” I thought it was interesting how business savvy he was, and how he could sell all those weapons without getting emotionally involved.

Best True story come film has to be Zodiac. Robert Downey jnr. was amazing (as was the rest of the cast) and the special features on the blu ray going into more detail on the killings were just as good as the film. Picture and sound quality were second to none.
I could watch it once a week and not get bored.
Loved The Damned United, following Brian Cloughs stormy 44 days as manager of Leeds,full of humour and Michael Sheen portrayed him just right
Braveheart. It portrayed the life and death of William Wollace perfectly!
